The University of Virginia’s undergraduate accounting program, housed in the McIntire School of Commerce, offers a unique curriculum designed to prepare students for careers in the public, private, and government sectors, and for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam.

Although students’ first two years focus primarily on interdisciplinary study in the liberal arts, the third and fourth years make up the heart of the business curriculum. The Integrated Core Experience (ICE) program takes up the entire third year, consisting of six interactive seminars that integrate all areas of business theory. The Integrated Core Experience curriculum emphasizes teamwork: Students work in small groups and multiple professors teach the material at once. Frequent guest lectures featuring distinguished business leaders round out the ICE experience.

In their final year at McIntire, students focus on one of four areas of concentration, including accounting. The accounting concentration aims to build upon the third year’s more general business education by providing in-depth instruction in the fundamental principles of the discipline. The curriculum uses a practical approach to accounting education, employing hands-on teaching methods like casework and simulations of real-world problems.
