Ewing, New Jersey
School of Business
Bachelor of Science in Accountancy

One of the most challenging majors at the school, the undergraduate accounting program at the College of New Jersey aims to equip students with the professional and technical skills they need to achieve their career goals. Though most graduates pursue careers in public accounting — according to the school’s website, 50 to 75 percent of accounting students are recruited by public firms each year — the program is designed to provide a comprehensive accounting education that prepares students for a variety of related careers.

In addition to their academic coursework, accounting majors at the College of New Jersey receive professional guidance as early as their first semester. Mandatory courses like Introduction to the Accounting Profession and Sophomore Career Planning feature presentations from some of the country’s top firms, giving students a glimpse into the life of a working accountant. This early access to accounting practitioners, coupled with the many networking events held on campus, allows students to begin building their professional networks before they enter the work force.

Career and placement
The College of New Jersey recommends that all business students, including accounting students, pursue an internship before they graduate. The School of Business works with the college’s Career Center to assist students with internship placement. Internships can result in more than just academic credit — according to the school, 90 to 95 percent of accounting students receive job offers from their internship site.

In addition to pursuing an internship, accounting students are encouraged to join one of the department’s three student organizations, all of which sponsor career-planning activities and other events on campus. These clubs are: the Student Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants, which aims to help students develop professional skills; The National Association of Black Accountants, which addresses the professional needs of minorities in the accounting profession; and Beta Alpha Psi, an honor society for high-achieving accounting and finance students.
