Discussing the Best Jobs for Accountants

Accountants work in four major fields including government accounting, internal auditing, management accounting, and public accounting.

Most accountants in these fields are Certified Public Accountants (CPAs). CPAs have the best job prospects in all major accounting fields, including:

  • Accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping, and payroll services
  • Management of companies and enterprises
  • Insurance carriers
  • Local government
  • State government

CPAs are often the preferred candidates because they have met certain moral, ethical, education, and experience standards set by each state. If you want to be in  management or  local and state government, you should know that such positions typically require CPAs to handle internal auditing, financial management, corporate and business tax preparation, and other complex tasks.

Accountants that don’t hold the CPA credential can find work in insurance, accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping, and payroll services.

Average salaries for different positions are listed here:

  • Accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping, and payroll services: $61,480
  • Management of companies and enterprises: $59,820
  • Insurance carriers: $59,550
  • Local government: $53,660
  • State government: $51,250

Not only do these jobs offer an impressive average salary, but benefits are attractive too.  Accountants working in these areas receive health and medical insurance, life insurance, 401(k) plan, and yearly vacations. High-level positions may also offer perks like an expense account, bonuses or a company car.

Although they didn’t make the top five list, forensic accounting jobs are still on the rise. Forensic accountants investigate white-collar crimes, they appear as expert witnesses at trials, and they settle contract disputes. Most forensic accountants are CPAs. They average anywhere from $45,900 to $78,210 per year.
